Facts
Paul was originally cast as the lead in ITV's Sharpe adaptations, but broke his leg playing football a few days into filming Sharpe's Rifles (1993) and had to be replaced by Sean Bean, who went on to keep the role. Bean's replacement of McGann triggered the largest insurance settlement in British television history, valued at £2.13m, but Paul retains a connection with Sharpe by narrating the audiobooks. Paul also narrowly missed out on replacing Michael Praed in Robin of Sherwood in 1986. Paul, along with his acting brothers Mark, Stephen and Joe, was once a member of the group The McGanns, which continues today as a trio (minus Paul). Paul was involved with just one single, in 1983, entitled Shame About the Boy backed with Red Light. Paul separated from his wife Annie after 14 years together in 2006, and began a two-year relationship with actress Susannah Harker, who had been a guest performer in the audio Shada. Paul and Annie have two sons: Joseph McGann, who is a grime and dubstep producer and DJ who performs under the aliases of Kahn and Gorgon Sound, and actor Jake McGann (who played the Doctor's great-grandson Alex Campbell in various Big Finish audios). Paul was once referenced during a Houses of Parliament speech made by MP Tom Watson, on October 18th, 2016.
