In 2012, Aisling won the Gilded Balloon So You Think You're Funny? stand-up contest at the Edinburgh Fringe, the first woman to do so in 20 years. Her birth name is Aisling O'Sullivan, but to avoid confusion with another Irish actor with the same name, her stage name is Aisling Bea (after her late father Brian, who took his own life when she was three years old). Aisling's sister is costume designer Sinead Kidao.

Doctor Who was Annetta's first TV job as a director, after having worked on six short films, including Winnie and the Duppy Bat (2006), Winking Man Rock (2010), Afro Punk Girl (2016) and The Arrival (2018). She also wrote these shorts. As well as directing, Annetta has worked as part of the production team of children's show M.I High (2007), and worked in the script department for productions such as Feather Boy (2004), All About Me (2007), 28 Weeks Later (2007), My Almost Famous Family (2009) and Boxing Day (2021).
