Thapelo was allegedly brutally assaulted by security guards in Maboneng in Johannesburg, and died in his sleep the day before his 25th birthday. The incident occurred on a night out with friends to celebrate his birthday; when a friend urinated against the wall of a nightclub, security guards reacted, and when Thapelo intervened, he was allegedly assaulted. Since Thapelo's passing, his family has campaigned for police to investigate charges of murder.
