In 1984, Lee was stable boy for Red Rum, the racehorse which won the Grand National three times in the 1970s. He has also worked as a Pontins Bluecoat entertainer, but was sacked from his job in Hemsby, Norfolk, for appearing drunk on stage and calling an audience member a "c***". In 2012, he published his autobiography, Mack the Knife. Lee suffers from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Pete began his writing career as a story editor on Australian soap Neighbours in 2008, after which he graduated to writing almost 100 episodes between 2008-2014 (including its 6,000th episode).
