Facts
During his career, he played Adolf Hitler five times, and Heinrich Himmler three times. He acted alongside five Doctors in the TV series, and a sixth (Paul McGann) in audio story The Stones of Venice (2001). Michael was the one to formally identify actor Declan Mulholland at the police mortuary after he was found dead on a train (as well as being the original actor to play Jabba the Hutt in a scene deleted from Star Wars, Declan also appeared in The Sea Devils and The Androids of Tara).

Facts
In 1963 Derek married legendary actress Dorothy Tutin. Their children are both actors - Nick Waring and Amanda Waring. Derek's father was Wing Commander H J Barton-Chapple, who had worked alongside John Logie Baird in pioneering television. Derek's brother was Richard Waring, known as a writer on sitcoms such as The Marriage Lines, My Wife Next Door, And Mother Makes Three/ Five and Robin's Nest.

Career highlights
In the 1960s Eric worked as an estate agent before training to become an English teacher, but around 1975 decided to go into writing, and wrote a number of radio plays before being approached to get involved with Doctor Who. Since leaving the series (acrimoniously) in 1986, Eric has continued to write mainly radio scripts, often for German radio.
